Inspiration can come in small packages

Image
I was wondering whether I would be writing any more blog this year when the inspiration for writing one came from unexpected quarters. This blog post is a result of my daughter's annual function which I had attended on Thursday. Kids around 4 years of age performing on stage enacting stories from Panchtantra is a beautiful sight but expecting them to teach a thing or two about life is something that you cannot imagine. This is exactly what happened that day. The whole performance involved depicting 5 stories about imbibing 5 different values in life. One may think what is the big deal since teacher's must have trained them for it. However, I am not trying to summarize any of the stories here and values explained through them. My focus is on the story not told or enacted but the one that emerged out through the innocent little ones.  The performers as I had said earlier were  4 year old kids. Getting kids of this age perform on stage by coordinating among themselves i...

An Inspirational Book I Read

Image
Last Saturday, I was at my in-laws place and happened to catch hold of the book “ Idli, Orchid and Will Power ” authored by Vithal Kamat . The timing could not have been better because I had lot of questions in mind about my way forward in life and this book gave me some valuable insights. Idli, Orchid and Will Power is a must read book for anyone who wishes to be an entrepreneur. Being an entrepreneur especially in a country like India is not easy. Family and society in general dissuades individuals from taking risk. Risk taking ability is what an entrepreneur needs. The ability to fight and survive against all odds is what makes an entrepreneur successful.  I feel that this book has all the ingredients for a good movie. The best part is that the book is not too elaborate. I managed to finish reading the book in two sessions on the same day. The chapters are short and to the point. You would never feel bored reading any of the chapters. The struggle that...

Ignorance is bliss

The idea of writing this blog post came to my mind after I observed my daughter have fun in the rain. In the past also I have written about how kids can teach us things . Rains in Mumbai can cause lot of frustration. Last Friday was one such rainy day. The cooling effect that rains bring got neutralized by the annoyance caused due to train services being cancelled and long traffic jams. People heading for work got stuck mid-way and some were not even in a position to abort journey and go back home. Those who somehow managed to reach office were left wondering how they will reach home in the evening.  My story was not too different from the average Mumbaite. I decided to take a bus instead of opting for the usual train journey as I was cautioned by one of my friend that trains were not plying due to water logging in the tracks. It was a good idea after all. I managed to reach office even though I was late. News channels and social media were abuzz with news ab...

To be of service till the last breath

This post is dedicated to a doctor whom I consulted just once but who left a lasting impression on me. About a month back I visited this doctor for a health issue. When reading this post one may think what is so great about this doctor that I chose to write about him after visiting him just once. The primary reason being that he decided to meet and treat me despite the fact that  he himself was advised bed rest by a doctor, as he was getting treated for broken ribs after having a fall. How and why this meeting happened? My sister-in-law was his patient and was her go to man mostly when she suffers any health issue right since her childhood days. She had his mobile number and one Sunday about a month back she called to check whether he is available in his clinic so that I could also consult him for an ailment. He responded saying that he is not fully fit but can get the checkup done at home. We both visited his house. His wife opened the door for us and lead us right to ...

Wish I could be a kid again

Being an adult what did I gain? I wish I could be a kid again As a grownup I am part of a rat race As a kid, butterflies I could chase Today life is a nightmare As a child, I had nothing to care Now I have so many worries to heed Then a bar of chocolate could fulfill my need

A funny interaction with a stranger

In my journey from home to my work place I take the local train. On Raksha Bhandan day, the train was unusually crowded. I had to stand in between the two seats facing each other in the train for most part of the journey. Since I did not get a place to sit I had placed my back pack on the top rack provided in the local train for luggage. When it was just 4 stations remaining for me to get down I happened to get a place to sit. There was a married couple seated face to face with each other. Both mother and dad carrying one of their kids on their lap. They had to get down at a station which was two stations prior to mine. I sat down next to the father of the kids. Due to the unusual rush, the father felt that it will be difficult for the couple to reach near the exit on time. Hence, he told his wife that they would need to make their move quickly so that they do not get stuck especially since they have their two kids to be carried as well. However, this conversation was overheard...

If my life story was a book, what would it be titled?

Image
After reflecting on events that happened in my life, as far as my mind can recollect, I think my life story would be titled  "I Strive, Destiny Drives"   . Yes, I do believe in destiny. I also believe in goals. However, my life so far has been destiny driven more than goal driven. I would love to ensure that I control my life rather than situations and circumstances. More often than not destiny has triumphed over free will. It is not that I never achieved any goals set by me. The scale is tilted more towards destiny. I personally do not recollect events that happened around my birth. I came to know from my mother that I was a premature baby. I came into this world approximately 2 months earlier than expected. You could say I was born impatient. However, life so far has been a lesson in patience. I specialized in Production engineering and during college days, I managed to clear my second year without keeping terms. This was a big surprise for me because there w...

A young professional at work

Image
Two weeks back, I had been to Thane station to receive my relatives who were coming from my native place. While I was waiting for the train to arrive, I saw a young boy walking with a carry bag and a shoe brush in his hand.  Three gentlemen were sitting on a bench nearby. This young boy approached them and asked whether they would like to get their shoes polished. After lot of persuasion, he managed to convince one of them. What followed after that kept me interested for quite sometime.  He pulled out all his stuff from the bag and sat down. He then started his work and was doing it with utmost sincerity and dedication. I could not stop myself from clicking a snap of his using my cellphone camera. The gentlemen kept asking questions to him. He answered them and at the same time kept working diligently. He seemed very experienced by looking at the manner in which he went about doing his work.  Two things came to my mind. First, a k...

31st December, 2009 - a Blue Moon Day

Image
31 st December, 2009 is definitely a date to remember for me. It happened to be a blue moon day and an eventful day for me, both for personal and professional reasons. My love got the green signal from my girl friend’s parents. On professional front I was informed that in the New Year I will be getting to play a new role. I felt as if I was on top of the world. In the evening I had met my girl friend and walked hand in hand and also asked her to pinch me hard because it was an unbelievable feeling for me. I wanted to confirm that I was not dreaming. She did the honors and I was assured that it was a reality. Our first meeting happened online in Orkut.  Soundlight a strange and different name sent an add request on Orkut. I wondered why but still went ahead and added her. The next day she happened to be online and I asked her the reason for adding me. She said that we had lot in common. I went and checked our mutual friends list and realized...
